ISLAMABAD:

Speakers at a convention on Tuesday said religious leaders had an important role to play in taking the youth away from extremist tendencies in the Islamic world.

Speaking at the “Ulema Convention” convened by the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), religious leaders also denounced extremist and terrorist outfits including the TTP, al-Qaeda, and the so-called Islamic State.

They also stressed resolving key disputes in the Muslim world — including Kashmir, Palestine, Syria and Iraq conflicts. PUC Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi said negotiations were the only way to achieve peace in Afghanistan.

Ashrafi also lauded religious parties and leaders for ensuring peace during Muharram. Ambassador of Palestine Walid Abu Ali, who also addressed the conference, highlighted the Israeli aggression against the people of Palestine.

He said 72 Palestinians had been killed and over two thousand injured in the last month by Israeli security forces.

He thanked Pakistan for providing diplomatic support to Palestinians. “We are thankful to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for raising the Palestine issue at the United Nations,” the ambassador said.
