Petroleum price hike: ‘Govt has stabbed us in the back’

Hundreds of Pakistan Workers Federation activists organise rally against the government at Sukkur city bypass.

SUKKUR:
Hundreds of Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF) activists organised a rally against the government at the Sukkur city bypass on Sunday.

They condemned the government for increasing the prices of petroleum products and said that it had stabbed people in the back. The workers also protested against rising levels of unemployment, general inflation, lawlessness and child labour.

The protesters, who marched along the cities roads, were led by PWF Sindh chapter president, Abdul Latif Nizamani, who is also the central president of Wapda Hydro Labour Union. PWF deputy secretary Osama Tariq and International Labour Organisation programme manager Ashfaq Ahmed were also present.

The workers believed that this price hike in petroleum products will trickle down to all other products and add to the burden of poor people, who can hardly afford one meal a day. They blamed the government’s economics policies for causing poverty in the country and hence forcing people to send their children to work instead of school.

They called upon the government to withdraw the new prices as soon as possible.
