Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz tehsil councillor Noor Jehan has been disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday for violating rules of the party in nazim elections.
Swabi PML-N President Iftikhar Ahmed Khan had filed a writ with the ECP against the councillor. It stated she had gone against the rules of ECP and the Local Government Act, 2013. According to Iftikhar, Noor Jehan voted for the opposition party in the nazim elections.
“Noor Jehan was elected on a PML-N ticket and the case is now under the jurisprudence of Advocate Muhammad Ishfaq Khan,” he added.
ECP declared Noor Jehan ineligible to hold her position and disqualified her from the council seat on Thursday.
More disqualifications
ECP disqualified Manshera minority member Saeed Luqman Gil for violating party discipline during elections for district and tehsil nazims on August 30. The hearing was carried out under the defection clause of the third amendment of Local Government Act, 2013.
According to a press release issued from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s K-P secretariat, provincial organiser Fazal Muhammad Khan was also called by chief election commissioner during the hearing to represent the party.
“PTI has no place for anyone who violates the constitution,” the document quoted Fazal as saying. “Action against 57 councillors in K-P ought to be an example for others.”
PTI issued show-cause notices to 57 councillors throughout K-P for violating party discipline during elections for district and tehsil nazim held in August. Subsequently all 57 councillors were expelled from the party after which references for their defection were sent to the ECP for further action.
Earlier, former provincial president and Charsadda district councillor Akbar Khan Matta was also called by ECP for violating party discipline in district and nazim elections.
After preliminary examination of evidence, ECP rescheduled the hearing of Matta and two councillors from Manshera for November 3.
