ISLAMABAD:
The head of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS)’s Burn Care Centre (BCC) Dr Mian Tariq Iqbal has revealed that the centre has been managing over 6,000 acute burn patients annually for the last seven years.
Talking to APP on Sunday, Tariq that since its inception in November 2007, a total of 49,357 patients, have been treated at the BCC till December 2014, including 27,147 male and 22,210 female patients.
He added that BCC was one of the best burn centres with provision of international standard quality care in the country.
“We are also managing patients from other cities and regional hospitals that follow our criteria available on our website,” Tariq shared.
As there is no such facility in the country, the number of referral cases from other cities has increased manifolds, he added. Tariq urged that similar BCCs should be built in all the major cities of the country.
“In our country, the mortality rate of a major burn is 40-50 per cent, whereas it is less than 20 per cent in developed countries”, he said.
Tariq explained that the PIMS burn centre has introduced advanced techniques and materials including synthetic skin and biological dressings that are being practiced in the best centres of developed countries to manage acute burns.
