KARACHI:

Two policemen were among five people arrested over their alleged involvement in a kidnapping case while an abducted man was recovered from their captivity on Wednesday.

The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) in Rasheedabad, Baldia Town. Abidabad police post in-charge ASI Aslam, constable Naeem and three of their companions, identified as Qamar, Wazir and Tahir, were among the arrested men. Officials said that the accused had kidnapped a man, identified as Muhammad Yousuf, and demanded Rs500,000 as ransom for his release. They had also warned his family of dire consequences if they informed the police. The arrests were made when the kidnappers had arrived to collect the ransom money in Rasheedabad.

AVCC DSP Raja Amjad said the kidnappers had abducted Yousuf from Korangi last Friday and held him at an isolated place. Meanwhile, he said, they were frequently demanding ransom from his family. He added that the abducted man was later released safely from the hideout of the kidnappers. Cases were registered against the suspects while further investigations are underway.
