ISLAMABAD:
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) restored on Wednesday membership of 58 lawmakers as they submitted their annual statements of assets to the authority.
The ECP had suspended 272 lawmakers on October 16, who failed to submit statements of their personal assets and liabilities - a legal requirement for all legislators.
Among those whose membership has been restored include 23 MNAs, 19 members of Punjab Assembly, four members of Sindh Assembly, three members of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly, and two members of Balochistan Assembly. Suspension of seven senators was also revoked.
SC issues notices to Punjab, federal govts
According to the law, every member elected to the legislature has to submit details of their assets and liabilities by September 30 every year.
However, the suspension clause in the law is also ambiguous as it does not specify what suspension would mean. Membership of lawmakers is restored as soon as they file their statements.
