KARACHI:
The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) police claimed to have busted on Tuesday a gang of robbers allegedly involved in one of the major bank robberies in the city. They also claimed to have arrested two suspected vehicle lifters.

The ACLC police arrested four suspects, identified as Muhammad Tariq alias Imran, Muhammad Saleem, Muhammad Faizan alias Qasim and Abdul Jawwad, after an alleged encounter in Block-15, Federal B Area. The arrests were disclosed during a press conference by ACLC chief SSP Irfan Bahadur at his office on Tuesday evening.

SSP Bahadur said that the arrested suspects were involved in a robbery at Soneri Bank and had also wounded a security guard who attempted to foil the robbery on August 18 this year. A group of robbers comprising at least four members had entered the branch of Soneri Bank. While entering the bank, the armed robbers opened fire on the security guard, 30-year-old Zafar Buksh, injuring him seriously. The robbers then held the employees and customers hostage at gunpoint. In addition to looting the cash, the robbers also snatched at least four cell phones and a weapon from a security guard. The robbers had also taken Rs10 million away with them as, while fleeing, the cash van arrived at the bank with cash.

The ACLC chief said that the police raided the hideout of the criminals in Federal B Area after receiving a tip-off about their presence. The officer also claims to have seized Rs1,500,000, which had been looted from the bank. A gun was also recovered that had been snatched from the security guard after injuring him. The officer said that cases were registered against them while further investigation was underway.

Similarly, the ACLC police also claim to have arrested two members of an interprovincial gang of vehicle lifters during a raid at Karman Chowrangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar. The arrested suspects were identified as Shah Alam Baig and Muhammad Aun. SSP Bahadur said that at least seven vehicles that they had stolen or snatched from different localities were also seized from their possession.
