ISLAMABAD:
The establishment of a ‘federal cancer registry’ has been ordered to gather data regarding the disease in the capital and help the steering committee draft a plan for cancer prevention and control.
State Minister for Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Barrister Usman Ibrahim directed for the registry’s compilation and said it will collect data on cancer patients from 18 hospitals of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and the federal government.
Ibrahim was chairing a meeting of the CADD core committee on cancer prevention and control on Thursday.
The minister said without accurate data on the number and nature of cancer patients, it is not possible to come up with an effective plan for prevention and control.
“Controlling non-communicable diseases including cancer prevention and control is a national priority; all efforts will be made to implement the plan, once developed,” Ibrahim said.
The government is committed to following the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations General Assembly, he added.
Dr Minhajus Siraj, government’s focal person for Integrated Mission on Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (imPACT), briefed the minister on a report by an inspection team from the International Atomic Energy Agency on cancer control.
The team visited Pakistan in December 2013, and recently submitted a comprehensive report.
Ibrahim expressed his resolve to capitalise on the recommendations.
The meeting also decided to initiate a written agreement with Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), Nuclear Medicine Oncology and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI) and PAEC for augmenting cancer patient treatment.
Under the agreement, Pims under CADD, and NORI under PAEC will augment treatment facilities for cancer patients in the matter of referrals, investigations, therapies, surgeries, emergency treatments and follow-ups.
