KARACHI:

The National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) Sindh chapter has challenged the acquittal of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Syed Ali Nawaz Shah in the land revenue fraud case.

The accountability bureau approached the Sindh High Court (SHC), which had suspended Shah's sentences awarded by the accountability court.

The PPP leader, who was elected to the provincial assembly on PS-65 (Mirpurkhas-II), his cousin, Khadim Ali Shah, and nephew, Imtiaz Ali Shah, were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of four years and three years, respectively. The accountability court had also imposed fines of Rs560,000, Rs540,000 and Rs430,000 on Ali Nawaz, Khadim Ali and Imtiaz Ali, respectively. The high court had, however, suspended their sentences and ordered them to be released on bail. NAB prosecutor Noor Muhammad Dayo said the SHC bench had erred in passing the judgment, despite the fact that his offence had successfully been proven in the trial court. The court was pleaded to suspend the division bench's order so that the accused served the sentences of the trial court.
