LAHORE:
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has directed an investigation officer to ensure regular appearance in the courts to pursue cases involving the agency pending hearings.

The move comes after a letter was sent by an additional district and sessions’ judge (ADSJ)to the FIA Lahore circle, seeking immediate directions for an officer, not less than the rank of sub inspector (SI), to pursue hearing of cases involving the agency as a party.

The letter, sent by ADSJ Muhammad Mazhar Saleem, said that action would be taken against the agency and the matter referred to the Lahore High Court if it failed to comply with the court directive.

The letter stated that several cases involving the agency had been adjourned between 10 and 15 times because no officer appeared in the court on days of the hearing. It said several notices had been sent to the agency in this regard.

The unnecessary delay in the proceedings was causing severe hardship to the litigants, it added.

Talking to The Express Tribune, FIA Director Usman Anwar said that he had asked an investigation officer to look into the matter as soon as he found out about the matter.

He said shortage of officers of the rank of assistant director and above could be responsible for the failure to follow up on cases pending hearings in district and sessions courts. He said FIA officials had to also pursue cases pending hearing in the LHC.

Court records show that hearings in some cases were adjourned for up to 20 times because no one from the FIA appeared in the court to pursue the matter.

In Muhammad Usman Sarwar Chaudhary vs the FIA (filed in 2013), the FIA director has yet to submit a detailed response in the court.

A one-liner comment was submitted in the court two years after the filing of the complaint.
