‘Say no to corruption’: Civic agency asked to display message at public places

NAB reviews progress on anti-corruption drive

ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday reviewed the progress on the ongoing awareness and prevention campaign launched by the bureau against corruption in the country, said a press release.

The NAB executive board at a meeting held at its headquarters discussed the progress on the campaign to arrest corrupt elements, proclaimed offenders and absconders.

The meeting was presided over by Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry.

The meeting affirmed its commitment and mandate to carry out awareness and prevention functions against corruption in pursuance of Section 33C of National Accountability Ordinance 1999.

Under its proactive approach, NAB has been engaging different government and non-government organizations and civil society in the fight against corruption.

In this context the bureau has asked the Capital Development Authority to display billboards carrying ‘Say No to Corruption’ message on the main tourist sites such as Daman-i-Koh, Shakarparian, Zero Point and the hillock on the Expressway.

Islamabad Police will display the message at all the police stations.

The bureau has already gotten printed ’say no to corruption’ message on ATM machines of all banks across the country. It organised seminars and walks on World Anti-Corruption Day in Islamabad and Lahore.

Similarly NAB and Higher Education Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for creating awareness among students and established 4,030 character building societies in various universities.

The bureau also collaborated with Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan Hockey Federation involving players to promote the message.

It also collaborated with PTV for airing the song ‘Say No to Corruption’ and with the gas and electricity companies to print NAB message on their utility bills. IESCO has started printing the message on 2.4 million electricity bills from February 2015.

Pakistan Post issued a commemorative stamp and Islamabad Traffic Police has started printing the message on all driving licences. PTA has disseminated the message to all mobile phone users through mobile phone companies on the eve of World Anti-Corruption Day; PIA is highlighting the message in all domestic and international flights. Pakistan Film Censor Board has asked all cinema houses to air the message. Health ministry has directed to print the message on all cigarette packs.

NAB has proposed to the Motorway Police to distribute pamphlets carrying the message among the travelers.

The message is being printed on all government tenders issued for publication in newspapers in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. Standees have been displayed at the entrance points of Marriott Hotel, Serena Hotel, Islamabad airport and major shopping malls of the capital.

The chairman while addressing the participants of the meeting said that NAB strongly believes in zero tolerance policy against corruption. The anti-corruption campaign aims at creating awareness among the people to help NAB in prevention of the menace and enforce rule of law across-the-board. He hoped that corruption and corrupt practices will be curbed with the help of all stakeholders, civil society, media and people at large.
