PESHAWAR: FATA Youth Alliance Chairperson Aniqa Mehsud demanded tribeswomen be given the same number of reserved seats in Parliament as settled parts of the country.

Mehsud issued this statement at a news conference at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday.

She was accompanied by women representatives from all seven agencies of the tribal areas. The chairperson also demanded the government ensure women’s inheritance rights.

Representatives from the tribal areas appreciated the draft of the Fata Reforms Bill. She told reporters they fully supported the bill, adding the National Assembly must adopt the legislation so Fata parliamentarians could introduce laws for the area.

“Women there must also be given the right to make decisions,” said Mehsud. She requested the government not to ignore the female population of Fata.

Meanwhile, people living alongside Ring Road also held a news conference in which they criticised the Peshawar Development Authority for demolishing their properties under an encroachment drive. They claimed the structures were, in fact, owned by them.

Residents pointed out the PDA was demolishing property within 52 feet of either side of the road. They said the land was purchased before the construction of the road. The irate locals added the government had not paid them compensation and was still not allowing the structure to exist.
