KARACHI: While the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has finalised a hectic 2011 for the national team prior to the Olympics preparation, coach Michel van den Heuvel has refused to confirm his return to the country to join the team ahead of the tough schedule.

“I have not set any plans,” Heuvel, who played a huge hand in Pakistan’s gold at the Asian Games, told The Express Tribune from Holland when asked about his plans of setting the team’s training camp for the Egypt tour in February. “I don’t know anything. I am not thinking about Pakistan hockey right now.”

Following the Asian Games, the coach, according to some PHF officials, hinted at giving up his post on what he termed as family concerns about his security. “I will take opinion of my family before joining the team again,” he said in November, according to officials. Heuvel, however, neither refused nor accepted the information. “Things like these are often discussed in Pakistan and I can’t comment on it.”

Though Heuvel has opted against giving any clear stance on his decision, the PHF will change the team management on January 20 and has already announced that Heuvel will continue as head coach.

The hockey team’s important year ahead of London Olympics will begin with a bilateral series against Egypt. The team will also participate in various tournaments in Holland, Germany, Scotland, Spain and Ireland besides competing in the Asian Champions Trophy, Azlan Shah Cup and the all-important 2011 Champions Trophy.
