LAHORE:

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) held a huge public meeting for the NA-122 by-elections at the Doongi Ground, Samanabad on Sunday.

Hundreds of supporters decked in party colours made their way to the venue where party chief Imran Khan addressed the meeting. The party has flexed its political muscle in Lahore by holding several public meetings.

On his arrival in the city, Imran Khan held a meeting with the PTI’s 24 coordinators for NA-122 by-poll. He was flanked by the provincial leadership of the party. The meeting was held at Aleem Khan’s office in Gulberg. Next, he chaired a meeting of the central executive committee of the party at the Hospitality Inn. The meeting focused on the NA-122 by-poll. PTI Punjab organiser Chaudhry Sarwar, Lahore organiser Shafqat Mehmood, Jehangir Khan Tareen, Aleem Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak were present.

Talking to the media, Imran Khan said that the election was not just a contest between two political parties. “It is a contest between a political party and government institutions. The PTI has trained its workers to be watchful of any attempt to rig the elections,” he said.

Reham Khan led a women workers’ rally from Garhi Shahu to Doongi Ground.

PTI supporters had started making their way to meeting venue several hours before it was scheduled to begin.

The meeting also featured party anthems to keep the crowds engaged.

MPA Mian Aslam Iqbal, Chaudhry Sarwar, Jehangir Tareen and PP-147 candidate Shoaib Siddiqui also addressed the crowd.

Aleem Khan said that Ayaz Sadiq had failed the people of the constituency. “Voters do not recognise him. They ask him where he has been since the 2013 elections,” he said.

He criticised the government for spending billions of rupees on infrastructure development projects instead of providing basic amenities such as drinking water to the people.

Around 300 policemen were deployed for security duty at the event. Walk-through gates were installed at various points around the ground. There were separate enclosures for women participants. Banners, badges, flags and face painting stalls were also set up.
