KARACHI:

Local government minister Nasir Shah has given one month to all the district municipal corporations (DMCs) to start the cleanliness drive.

Talking to the media after a meeting at the commissioner's office on Saturday, the minister said, "Every day around 12,000 metric tons of garbage is generated in Karachi but all the six DMCs hardly lift 4,000 to 5,000 metric tons daily."

Shah said that around 7,000 tons of garbage is dumped inside the city. He added that the Solid Waste Management Board has given a deadline to hand over the function of these municipal services by March 2016 and then private firms will be given contracts to lift garbage from different areas of the city.

The minister further said that strict action will be taken against negligent officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

Referring to the delimitation case, the minister said that the Sindh High Court's decision about delimitation has created confusion which is why the provincial government will challenge the decision in apex court on Monday.
