LAHORE: Pakistan Army has decided to initiate a court of inquiry against Major Rana Hameed, who has been implicated in the Canal Motors scam in which 228 investors were cheated out of Rs1.3005 billion.

The Pakistan Army Formation Headquarters has requested Director General National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Punjab Justice (retired) Rana Zahid Mahmood and the investigation officer to apprise it of the allegations as well as the evidence in order to proceed with a court of inquiry against the Major under the Army Act, The Express Tribune has learnt. SP Jaranawala Rana Mansoor ul Haq along with his brother, Rana Irfan ul Haq and Muhammad Anwar appeared before the investigation officer of the ‘Canal Motors scam’ on Wednesday.

They told NAB investigators that their total liability in this scam amounts to less than Rs1.3005 billion as some claimants have already been refunded.

They requested NAB to deduct the payments made to the investors by Rana Qaiser Nazir from the total liability. They tried to convince NAB investigators of the authenticity of their claims by presenting statements from five accounts in their names.

The investigators after examining the record in their custody summoned the account holders, SP Mansoor ul Haq, Irfan and Anwer, for further inquiry.

The key suspect, Nazir, chief executive of Canal Motors, has offered to clear his liability through ‘Voluntary Return’ in a request submitted to DG NAB Punjab by his counsel, offering to reimburse Rs150 million.

NAB, however, has calculated his liability and it stands at Rs450 million. Anwer Khan has countered it on the plea that he has already refunded Rs300 million to the investors.

Nazir in connivance with his associates and close relatives swindled the money from investors in booking vehicles.

After NAB received 10 more claims amounting to Rs25 million, the total amount has climbed to Rs1.3005 billion from Rs1.28 billion.
