Medical malpractice? ATH to investigate delivery of twins in hospital corridor
Rehman has ordered an enquiry into the matter of “high negligence on the part of the labour department
ABBOTTABAD:
Ayub Teaching Hospital (ATH) Abbottabad Director Major Dr Siddique Rehman ordered an enquiry into a case where a woman delivered twin babies outside its labour room on Wednesday.
A pregnant Ghuncha Gul, 23, was brought to ATH on Tuesday morning. The emergency department admitted her into the labour room for delivery. However, when she was taken there, instead of preparing for her delivery, the doctor on duty referred her to a gynaecologist at the out-patient department (OPD) for a final opinion. In the meantime, Ghuncha went into labour. Despite persistent complaints and requests made by her husband, the hospital staff refused to cooperate. Ghuncha delivered her twin babies in the corridor of OPD at ATH.
Staff springs to action
According to insiders in the gynaecology department, security guards rushed to help when they saw Ghuncha deliver. They placed screens around her to provide some form of privacy.
The matter was immediately brought into the attention of the ATH director who ordered the labour room staff to take care of the mother and her twins immediately. Ghuncha was later shifted to Gynaecology Ward B for postnatal treatment.
Criticism
Rehman has ordered an enquiry into the matter of “high negligence on the part of the labour department.”
When contacted, the director was unavailable for comments. Meanwhile, human rights activists Madni Ejaz and Tariq Khan condemned the incident, calling it unethical. They demanded a criminal case be registered against the staff of the labour room.
