MINGORA:
Hundreds of pamphlets were distributed and several walks were organised to create awareness about Congo virus in Swat on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Swat District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Syed Ali while supervising the walk in Saidu Sharif said a similar activity took place in Mingora on Tuesday and more walks were being arranged in various tehsils of the district on Wednesday. He added hundreds of pamphlets were also distributed among the public to increase their awareness of the disease.

“Congo fever does not spread if you take some precautionary measures,” said Ali. He explained the virus can infect humans who come into direct contact with the blood or tissues of infected animals or bites of infected ticks.

“Since Eidul Azha is round the corner and it is difficult for the public to find out whether or not an animal is infected, it is best to take precautionary steps,” Dr Ali explained. He advised people to avoid contact with the bodily fluids of animals and to wear gloves during the slaughtering.

Talking to The Express Tribune Ali said although not a single case of Congo fever had surfaced in the district in 2015, taking precautionary measures would ensure further safety. The public lauded the efforts taken by the district government and stated the pamphlets were highly informative.
