Health hazards: Saidu hospitals lack facilities

Concerned officials could not be contacted.

SWAT:
Local people on Tuesday complained of lack of hygiene and facilities at the children’s ward in Saidu Group of Hospitals. They demanded of the hospital administration to remove heaps of garbage and clinical wastes dumped on the hospital premises and ensure cleanliness in the children’s ward.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Nausher, a child patient’s father visiting the hospital said, “We have to cover our noses to escape the suffocating foul smell of garbage, which nobody bothers to clean.”

He said that piles of garbage and clinical waste can be seen outside the hospital, while some trash can also be seen scattered inside the children’s ward. “We have complained several times to the hospital administration to remove these heaps of garbage but nobody cares,” he said.

Muhammad Khan, father of a child patient admitted in the children ward, said, “There are no doctors in this ward, only nurses, who get irritated when we contact them for service.”

He said that the only reason he comes to this hospital is because he cannot afford medical costs of private hospitals. “But due to lack of care, our patients end up getting sicker here,” Khan said. He said the hospital lacks treatment facilities and does not even provide free medication. “We have to buy medicines ourselves from the market,” he said.

Khan said that people have made several complaints to the hospital administration to ensure cleanliness and availability of doctors and paramedic staff in the children’s ward but the situation remains unchanged.

Constructed during the state-era, the two major hospitals of the area – known as Saidu Group of Hospitals – used to be famous for providing quality treatment facilities and medical services to patients from other states and district as well.

When contacted, the hospital administration said that only authorised officials can comment on the issue. Despite repeated attempts, the concerned officials could not be contacted till the filing of this report.
