Ajmal should quit now, says PCB official

Official says off-spinner was dropped from Zimbabwe, England squads due to his ineffectiveness

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official on Monday said ace off-spinner Saeed Ajmal should ponder over retirement as he has not been effective enough after correcting his bowling action.

Talking to APP, the PCB official, who requested anonymity, said Ajmal has not been as much successful as he was prior to his ban.

"His deliveries are now mostly lacking good line and length and he went wicket-less on more than one occasion," he said.

He said that is the reason why Ajmal has not been selected in the recent national squads.

"Ajmal has not been selected in the squad for upcoming series against Zimbabwe and England [due to his ineffectiveness]," he said.

Saeed Ajmal, however, in a twitter message vowed to make a successful comeback to international cricket, expressing his resolve to silence his critics.

According to unconfirmed media reports, Ajmal was weighing the option of retirement, but he wants to play a send-off match or series for Pakistan before saying goodbye to international cricket, for which he may make a request to the PCB.

Ajmal came up with the decision after the selection committee did not select him in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and England.

Ajmal was banned in September last year from bowling in international cricket due to his bowling action. While in the process of remodelling his bowling action, Ajmal ruled himself out of the 2015 World Cup.

In February 2015, he underwent official testing and was given a clean chit to bowl in all formats of international cricket.

Ajmal has played two ODIs in 2015 and took only one wicket in 19.1 overs with an economy of 6.41. In the only T20 match he played, he went wicket-less in 3.2 overs for 25 runs.
