JPMC to merge with Sindh Medical College
Jinnah hospital protests, wants separate status as university.

The federal government has decided to merge the Sindh Medical College (SMC) and the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and grant them the status of a university but Jinnah hospital’s management is less than happy with the proposal.
Expressing their reservations, JPMC said that the hospital should be granted the status of a university separately under the federal government.
The decision to form the Sindh Medical University was made by President Asif Ali Zardari. A meeting was held on Monday to discuss the proposal. The meeting was attended by Sindh Chief Secretary, Sindh Health Secretary, vice chancellors of Dow University and LUMHS University, the JPMC executive director, federal additional secretary and others.
Participants were told that the president had decided to separate Sindh Medical College from Dow and form an independent Sindh Medical University.
JPMC should not be merged with SMU, the hospital’s management said at the meeting. “The hospital is named after Baba-e-Qaum and is the oldest hospital under the federal government,” they added.
This is not the first attempt to elevate SMC. However, this time around the government wants to merge JPMC and create a united SMU.
SMC was established in 1973 and a few years after Dow University was set up, SMC was handed over to the latter.
