MULTAN:

Scores of villagers on Saturday staged a protest demonstration against the district administration, saying it had failed to take action against illegal cattle trade in their neighbourhoods.

Hamza, one of the protesters, said the road connecting Multan to Mianwali had been blocked for several days because cattle dealers and fruit vendors had set up their businesses at Saraye Muhajar.

He said the area had gotten filthy and traffic was often suspended for hours.

Assistant Commissioner Ali Akhtar Saifullah said teams had been formed to check illegal cattle trade. “The district administration had marked several areas for cattle trade ahead of Eid,” he said. “Dealers had been told to stay away from roads and streets.”  He said cattle markets and stalls should keep a 20-feet distance from the highway.  He said action will be taken against those violating the rules.
