KARACHI:
At least three people were injured as a result of a blast near the cafeteria in Karachi University on Tuesday.
The university, however, will remain open and the examinations will be carried out according to the schedule. The injured received minor injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital.
The explosion resulted in a low intensity blast in the bushes close to Masjidul Imran.
Superintendent of Police Naeem Sheikh, speaking to Express News, said that one kilogramme of explosive material was used in the blast. He cited lack of proper security arrangements at the university for the blast. He said that the motive behind the blast could only be ascertained after a full investigation of the matter.
A large number of students had been present at the university as it had re-opened after a recent closure due to clashes on campus.
Students gathered to protest after the explosion and chanted slogans against the university administration. The students staged sit-ins first at the administration block and then at the silver jubilee gate of the university.
A meeting chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the university was convened to review the situation. The administration had initially decided to shut down the university down for three days but later withdrew the decision.
