Review meeting: NAB continues campaign against corrupt elements

Chairman reviewed inquiries, complaint verifications and investigations.

ISLAMABAD:
An executive board meeting of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was held at its headquarters on Thursday.

Headed by NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, the meeting decided to file a reference against Sindh Cooperative Society’s former managing director Naveed Zarar Khan, among others. The accused are alleged of corruption amount to over Rs1.8 billion.

The meeting also authorised four complaint verifications.

The first complaint verification was authorised against PML-N MNA Syed Iftikharul Hassan, among others.

The second was authorised against Syed Ali Nawaz Shah, Sindh’s former agriculture minister, and others, involving the Sindh On-Farm Water Management Project.

The third was authorised against Zaheeruddin, Punjab’s former provincial minister and former Faisalabad nazim Akhtar Ali, for illegally acquiring government land.

The fourth complaint was authorised against industries and production officers allegedly involved in corruption worth Rs3 billion.

Furthermore, the meeting decided to authorise five inquiries.

The first inquiry was authorised against former Auditor-General Muhammad Akhtar Buland Rana.

The second was authorised against Dr Zafar Iqbal, former vice-chancellor, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, for alleged misappropriation.

The third inquiry was authorised against Dr Joseph Wilson, former acting chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan, for alleged corruption amounting to over Rs10.2 million.


The fourth inquiry was authorised against Sindh’s former forest and wildlife minister Gayan Chand, former secretary forests Waseem Ahmed Ursani and ex-chief forest conservator Riaz Ahmed Wagan. The accused allegedly misappropriated a departmental budget worth Rs150 million.

The fifth was authorised against commerce and industries officers involved in corruption worth Rs2.1 billion.

The meeting also decided to authorise two investigations.

The first investigation was authorised against National Insurance Company Limited officials including former chairman Abid Javed Akbar and First Dawood Investment Bank Chairman Rafique Dawood. They are accused of making irregular investments worth Rs100 million to the bank.

The second investigation was authorised against officers of the National Transmission and Despatch Company and chief executives of transformers manufacturers, among others, for falsifying data to extend undue benefits to transformer manufacturers.

The meeting also decided to authorise another inquiry against officials of the Defence Housing Authority, among others, for cheating the public of Rs3.632 billion.

The NAB chairman also approved plea bargain requests from officers in the Qasr-e-Zauq investigation in Lahore, and a request from former WAPDA chairman Zahid Ali Akbar.

In an inquiry against officers of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the meeting decided to refer the case to the CDA. The authority was given directions to report back to the board with a final settlement regarding claims by the Multi-Professional Cooperative Housing Society, in light of a Supreme Court ruling.

In addition, the meeting decided to close inquiries against Kasur’s MNA Rana Muhammad Ishaq, officials of Pattoki’s Tehsil Municipal Administration, and others.

It was also decided at the meeting to take no further action against Arif Hameed, former managing director of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, due to a lack of incriminating evidence.
