LAHORE:

The Environment Protection Department (EPD) on Thursday sealed 39 factories and mills near Lahore over pollution.

An EPD team, headed by Environment district officer Younis Zahid, sealed steel rerolling mills that were using old tyres, carbon powder, coal powder without wet scrubber and extracting oil from old tyres.

The manufacturing units sealed included 22 steel rerolling mills, 12 charcoal drum melting units, three furnaces, pyrolysis plants and tyre carbons godowns.

Environment Secretary Iqbal Ahmed Chauhan had earlier directed instructions to all environment officers to take stern action against mills and factories causing environmental pollution. He said that factory owners should use safer fuels and refrain from using substandard coal powder in their factories.

“Safety equipment should be installed in the factories to protect the environment.
