ISLAMABAD:

To create ripples in the fashion industry, one has to have a big pebble and an accurate throw. Islamabad-based designer Hisham Malik aims at having such an impact on the local fashion scene, as he launches his debut collection ‘Zirah’ under his eponymous brand at multi-designer store Labels in the capital.

“Zirah means armour in Urdu,” said Malik. “I chose the name as a tribute to my target market, which is strong and confident women,” he added. The semi-formal collection that was originally displayed at the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week last April, features jackets, kimonos, capes, shirts, dresses, cigarette pants and culottes.

Using embroidered motifs, such as keys, spider webs and samurai armour, Malik has attempted to diverge from the norm by offering a unique palette. With a string of well-known designers already in place, Malik admitted he was nervous and advised against introducing something like this to the fashion table. “I had put a considerable amount of effort and capital into developing this collection which further added to my angst,” he shared. But Malik had faith in his ability to present and rivet the attention of people with his unique aesthetics.

Having conducted year-long research to gain inspiration, and develop a business plan and branding strategy, Malik seems to be well-informed about the market dynamics. “My primary source of inspiration was a set of interviews I conducted with successful working women in Pakistan. A common thread in the interviews was their ability to redefine traditional leadership roles by embracing their femininity,” he explained. Malik tried to reflect this in his work by incorporating that into the structure and flow of his offerings. “I also showcased this in my use of contrasting shades, such as indigo blue and blush pink with neutrals.”

Attended by fashion enthusiasts, friends and family of the designer, as well as the women he interviewed prior to the collection, the launch was a well-received one. One of the attendees at the event, Tanya, said, “I’m a traveller and looking at this collection, with its unique cuts, I can say it’s not very different from the creations of big fashion houses, such as Chanel or Dior. I can envisage myself wearing this collection on my next international trip.”

Malik has received comprehensive training from different schools. He has studied at the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design, Canada, the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design in Lahore, and The University of Salford, United Kingdom. Following the launch of his collection, Malik is set to broaden horizons and his creative reach with a bridal couture range, which he’s currently working on.
