Forcibly married woman jumps into well

Six women attempt suicide in Faisalabad on Sunday-Monday

A newlywed woman in Rahim Yar Khan district and an unemployed young man in Faisalabad district committed suicide on Monday. Police said 10 other people in Faisalabad district had attempted suicide on Sunday-Monday, six of them were women.

Police said the 21-year-old woman had been married two weeks ago. She committed suicide on Monday by jumping into a well near her house on Bagh-i-Bahar Road.

She had written a note saying that she was going to kill herself because her family had forced her to marry. Police said they had taken the body out of the well and had taken it to the tehsil headquarters hospital for autopsy.


In Faisalabad, a 20-year-old resident of Chak 266-RB swallowed pesticide and died. His family told police that he had been quite dejected over being unable to find a job. Police said the man’s family was faced with serious financial constraints and it had fallen on the young man to provide for them. His family took him to a hospital for treatment but he died soon after. Police said they had completed medico-legal formalities and handed the body over to his relatives.

Faisalabad police said a  30-year-old woman, resident of Mansoorabad; a 20-year-old man, resident of Chak 203-RB; a 30-year-old woman, resident of Naseerabad; a 50-year-old woman from Partap Nagar; a 21-year-old man, resident of Chishtia Park; a 26-year-old woman, resident of Jaranwala; a 49-year-old woman, resident of Satellite Town; a 22-year-old man, resident of Samanabad; a 14-year-old girl, resident of Roza Park; and a 34-year-old woman, resident of Chak 467-GB, had attempted suicide on Sunday-Monday. Police said they were admitted in various hospitals in the city and were undergoing treatment.

Separately, Pakka Laraan police said Ghulam Husain and Ghulam Muhammad were digging a well in Chaudhry Manna’s fields in Syedpur village, Rahim Yar Khan, when a large mound of earth buried them. Husain died on the spot and Ghulam Muhammad fainted. Rescue-1122 were called and they took the men to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan, where Ghulam Muhammad is being treated.
