MQM strike call fails to shut Karachi

KARACHI:
A strike call given by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) for Saturday received a lukewarm response as businesses and transport remained unaffected in all major cities and towns of Sindh.
The party had ‘appealed’ to traders and transporters to close their businesses and observe a ‘day of mourning’ in protest against the killing of four of its workers in an encounter with the Rangers – the paramilitary force claimed the slain MQM activists were target killers.
The MQM’s appeal seemingly fell on deaf ears as commercial hubs remained open for business and transport continued normally.
A partial strike was observed in Karachi with business in most areas unaffected. Although markets in some areas did shut down, Rangers troops patrolling those neighbourhoods were seen asking shopkeepers keep their businesses open.
The strike met a similar response in other parts of Sindh.
