PESHAWAR:
Officials of the customs department foiled a sabotage bid by seizing 30 tonnes of explosives on GT Road in the city on Friday night. A suspect was arrested from the area.

Talking to The Express Tribune, an official from the department said they had received a tip-off from an intelligence agency about a container full of explosives that was being transported from Karachi to Peshawar.

“We intercepted the vehicle at Chamkani and arrested the driver” he said. “Some of the explosives were in the shape of fire crackers.

We have reason to believe that they were going to use them to orchestrate a terrorist attack.”

He added that they are trying not to jump to conclusions about the matter. “At this stage, we do not have information on the senders and recipients of the explosives,” he added.

An FIR has been registered and further investigation is under way. The culprit has been moved to an undisclosed location for further interrogation.
