LAHORE:

“The Pakistan-China economic corridor will transform the economy and bring prosperity to the region,” said National Assembly Member Hamza Shahbaz on Wednesday.

He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Zakat and Ushr Department’s Self-Employment Scheme.

He said the scheme was a revolutionary programme.

He distributed cheques among beneficiaries of the programme.

He said salaries of contractual employees of the Zakat and Ushr Department would be raised by 25 to 33 per cent.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister for Zakat and Ushr Malik Nadeem Kamran said under the scheme Rs50,000 would be distributed among 205 people in the first phase. He said the programme would be extended to nine districts of the province.

Shahbaz said the people would hold lawmakers accountable in the 2018 elections.

“The mandate will be given again only to those who can deliver on their election promises,” he said.

He said the youth should work hard and seek education.

He said the government was not concerned about getting re-elected. “Our priority is strengthening the economy and uplifting the living standards,” he said. Hamza said terrorism had crippled the economy. “Pakistan Army’s efforts to eradicate the menace will not be in vain,” he said.

He said the government aimed to end load shedding by the end of 2017.

He said Pakistan wanted to have a dialogue with India without compromising on national dignity and honour.
