6-Red World Championship: Asif, Asjad progress to last-32 in Thailand

Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif and Asjad Iqbal joined compatriot and 2014 IBSF world championship runner-up Mohammad Sajjad in the last-32 of the SangSom 6-Red World Championship in Thailand on Wednesday.
Asjad was involved in a must-win Group F encounter against England’s Joe Perry and after nine gruelling frames, the Faisalabad-based player eventually came out on top.
The see-saw battle concluded when Asjad, 4-3 down, claimed back-to-back frames to win the match 5-4 with a scoreline of 0-67 (67), 44-0, 57-0 (57), 0-59 (59), 06-61 (61), 41-0, 24-39, 35-05 and 44-0.
Meanwhile, Asif, who needed at least one win to have any chance of progressing, defeated Thailand’s Noppadon Noppachorn 5-3 in his Group C clash.
Asif was dominant throughout the match, leading 4-1 at one stage before eventually winning with scores of 70-0(70), 38-29, 62-01, 19-29, 47-0, 09-55, 01-55 and 46-43.
In his second match of the day, Asif was thrashed 5-2 by England’s Judd Trump by a scoreline of 0-63, 10-45, 34-0, 37-0, 40-0, 53-06 and 46-05.
Sajjad, who had already qualified for the last-32, lost 5-4 against Scotland’s Anthony McGill and will vie with another Scot Graeme Dott, for a place in the last-16.
Asjad, on the other hand, will face Wales Ryan Day in his last-32 match, while Asif will lock horns with Thailand’s Tanawat Tirapongpaiboon.
