Kept waiting: Councillors protest against police’s indifference

Over a hundred village councillors protested against Mingora police on Tuesday for failing to address their grievances.
“We went to the police station on the call of a police official in the Mingora circle,” village councillor Nisar Khan told The Express Tribune during a protest outside Swat Press Club on Tuesday. “However, no one entertained us.” Another village councillor, Janan, said, “We were kept waiting for three hours and even then police officials did not see us.”
Agitated by the behaviour of the police, village councillor Ikramullah demanded officials of the Mingora police station to be transferred as they were arrogant and refused to serve the people. “We have come here to settle law and order matters; not to be treated in this manner,” he said. “If any mishap occurs in the area, we will not be responsible. How can we serve the public if police officials continue to treat us this way?”
While talking to The Express Tribune, DSP Siddique Akbar said he apologised to the councillors for being unable to attend the meeting. “It is true I did not attend, but it is false that I did not want to meet the councillors,” he said.
