Coming soon: PK-93 by-election on September 15
Seat fell vacant after JI’s Malik Behram was disqualified over fake degree
PESHAWAR/TIMERGARA:
Preparations are under way for the September 15 by-election in PK-93 in Wari tehsil of Upper Dir.
It was decided around 7,000 police personnel and army officials will be deployed for security during the process.
The district administration informed all candidates, including Pakistan Peoples Party’s Sahibzada Sanaullah, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Azam Khan and other independent candidates about the code of conduct.
The number of registered voters in the district is 148,076, including 90,368 men and 57,708 women. These voters will cast their ballots at around 120 polling stations for men and women. However, six separate polling stations would also be established for women only. Of the 120 polling stations, the district administration declared 30 sensitive, while 90 were highly sensitive.
Friends and foes
While speaking to The Express Tribune, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf K-P Organiser Fazal Muhammad Khan said his party will support the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the seat. “Since PTI and JI are allies in the province, we will support the religious party’s candidate in the by-election.”
However, tough competition is expected between the candidates of JI and PPP for the seat.
Contesting for JI is the son of Malik Behram, Muhammad Azam. Behram was disqualified due to a fake degree case in July when a petition was filed against him in the election tribunal by PPP’s Sanaullah. The berth has been vacant since then.
However, PPP is still also in a decent position with the support of Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Story of PK-93
Malik Behram won the seat in the general election of 2013 after he got 12,893 votes. He was followed by PPP’s Sanaullah who bagged 9,700 votes. PML-N’s Malik Fakher Hayat stood third with 7,827 votes, ANP’s Raja Amir Zaman had 1,594 votes and PTI’s Sajad Fayaz secured 6,153 votes.
However, for the by-elections, political pundits believe Sanaullah has more potential. They said although JI has won in the district before, it is weaker this time.
The constituency, PK-93, includes 13 union councils with five in Lower Dir. In the local government elections that were held recently, JI has secured only one union council seat despite having a number of services to its credit in these five UCs.
