Agriculture efficiency: Crop-related info via SMS

MULTAN: The Punjab agriculture department has decided to disseminate crop-related information along with weather forecast among farmers through short message service (SMS) primarily for better crop management, said Task Force on Agriculture Additional Secretary Ahmed Ali Zafar. “Agriculture department has provided android phone sets to field assistants for more efficiency in the sector, they are now paying farm to farm visits for guidance and registration of farmers,” he said. He further informed that the department was monitoring the performance of field assistants on a daily basis by taking benefit of GPS facility provided on the phone sets. “Farmers must contact agriculture department for soil analysis as the balanced use of fertilisers would offer them economic benefits not only by reducing use of fertilisers but also enhancing crops”, he added.
