Gujrat, Sialkot flood prevention plans okayed

The Punjab Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management has approved a Rs186 million project to prevent overflow of Nallah Shahbaz Purdwara in Gujrat.
In a meeting, the committee also approved a scheme to prevent erosion along River Jhelum in Bhera at a cost of Rs32 million, Rs40 million for the prevention of sheet flooding in Sialkot.
An allocation of Rs59 million was approved for dealing with drought in Bahawalpur division.
Presiding over the meeting, Cabinet Committee Chairman Khawaja Salman Rafique said Rs51 billion had been distributed among flood victims.
He said immediate steps were being taken to protect agricultural land in Muzaffargarh from erosion along River Chenab. Projects worth more than Rs92 million were discussed to prevent flood erosion in Jhang district.
Allocation of funds for providing drinking water to the tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan was also considered.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia briefed the participants on the drought situation in Cholistan.
