Public transport: Commuters left at ‘mercy of transporters’
Call for strict action against transporters not completing designated routes
ISLAMABAD:
Commuters have protested against intra-city public transporters not completing their designated routes.
People have demanded that the transport authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi take action and implement the route guidelines and fare schedule.
Commuters said that they were often left at the mercy of transporters who do not let the long-distance passengers in. They said the situation was particularly worse on routes 111 and 124 which run from Rawat to F-8 Markaz and Sihala to F-8 Markaz respectively.
People said the authorities were hand in glove with the transporters and hence taken no step beyond tokenism to address the public complaints.
Thousands of government and private-sector employees and visitors to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Polyclinic hospitals use route number 111, 124, 136, 1 and 21. They said traffic police officials are only concerned with regulating the traffic and called for a separate body to regulate public transporters in the capital.
