LAHORE: The Cathedral Church resonated with Christmas carols and music late on Christmas Eve. As the clock struck 12, baby Jesus was placed in the cradle, marking the start of Christmas Day.

The preparations that had begun since early December culminated with the Lahore Archbishop, Alexander John Malik, wishing the congregation a happy Christmas. “The hall erupts into frenzy after 12,” says Aftab, a second year student.

“The carols sung on Christmas require months of practice,” said Aftab who was also a part of the choir. “We played traditional Christmas carols that have been passed down through generations,” explained Sir Griffin James, the music coordinator.

Pastor Shahid Miraj who also distributed gifts amongst the children delivered the morning sermon in Urdu while the midnight service was conducted in both English and Urdu. “This is a time for peace and happiness,” Pastor Shahid said.

“Christmas promotes love, peace and humanity,” said Father Samson Saleem who was taking pictures with his family in front the church’s old crosses. “Families get together and try to share the happiness with those who are needy.” Naved, another attendee described Christmas as a day for those who have sinned or are poor.  “Nothing is more important on Christmas than helping the needy and giving,” he added.

Special midnight services were held at all major churches including the St Anthony’s High School Church, the Naulakha Church, Don Bosco Church and the church at FC College.
