Thinking big: Govt to establish model schools in five districts
Teachers to receive special training to boost educational standards
PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has given the green signal to establish model schools in five districts and has allocated Rs1 billion for this purpose.
An official of the K-P Elementary and Secondary Education department told The Express Tribune on Saturday, the decision to establish 100 schools at par with international standards across the province was taken on February 1.
“It was decided that a budget of Rs5 billion would be allocated for the project,” he said. “During a meeting held earlier this week, the department approved Rs1 billion to establish schools in five districts.”
Approved
Speaking to The Express Tribune, K-P Elementary and Secondary Education Director Rafiq Khattak said these schools will initially be established in five districts – Karak, Haripur, Charsadda, Hangu and Battagram – and will subsequently be extended to other districts.
“Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has approved the plan,” he said.
According to Rafiq, teachers will receive special training to boost educational standards at the institutes.
Changing the game
Another official privy to the development said there are a series of negative perceptions about government schools.
“A majority of students drop out of government schools and opt for private schools,” he said. “This is largely because parents believe government schools do not provide students with a diverse menu of opportunities to learn.”
The official claimed the new schools will break these stereotypes and improve educational standards.
“These schools will be modelled on top ranked institutes across the world,” he said. “They will be equipped with all kinds of facilities. Once parents realise their children have access to a wider range of resources, they will no longer be reluctant to enrol their children at government schools.”
He added the model schools will be set up in every district of the province and funds for the project will be released in phases.
