‘Rescue 1122 working for safer communities’

The Punjab Emergency Service (PES) is setting up Community Emergency Response Teams to promote safer communities and provide an emergency cover to schools, PES Director Arshad Zia said on Friday.
He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of a two-day consultative workshop on A Manual for Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction. The PES had organised the workshop in collaboration with the UNICEF and the School Education Department.
Divisional and district emergency officers, educationists and members of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the Civil Defence Department, the Directorate of Staff Development, the Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department and the Pakistan Girls Guides and Boys Scouts Associations of Pakistan attended the workshop. “This joint venture will prove a milestone in changing minds with regard to safety measures at educational institutions,” Zia said. He said the PES had provided training on life-safety skills to more than 42,000 citizens. School Education Department Special Secretary Ahmed Ali Kamboh stressed the need for preparedness to tackle disasters.
