MINGORA:
Over a hundred Lady Health Workers protested against the government for not issuing salaries and making them permanent employees in Swat district on Monday.

Hundreds of LHWs, along with their supervisors, drivers and other staffers marched from Saidu Teaching Hospital to Swat Press Club on Monday. They held placards with slogans inscribed on them.

Salma Bibi, a protester, said many LHWs had not been made permanent even though the Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued directives in this regard. She added they have also not been paid salaries for the past three months.

Health supervisor Rashid Khan said he along with all LHWs and supervisors will not take part in any campaign against polio and dengue fever in the district anymore.

“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan and Chief Minister Pervez Khattak are not serious about  resolving our issues,” he added.

State of despair

Naila Bibi, another LHW, told The Express Tribune she has not been paid her monthly salary of Rs8,000 for the past three months.

“I have performed my responsibilities with care,” she said. “Furthermore, I have also done things I am not expected to do. I have to run a household and cannot tolerate being treated in this manner anymore.”

The protest continued till noon after which District Health Officer Saeed Ahmad Khan and Assistant Commissioner Ishfaq Khan arrived on the scene and assured protesters their salaries would be issued within two weeks. The protesters said they will only perform their duties once they get paid.
