A policeman was shot dead during a firing incident in Liaquatabad near the Super Market police station on Sunday.



The deceased, Maqsood, 30, along with his fellow policemen intercepted two suspects riding a motorcycle during snap-checking, said SHO Shahnawaz Shahani. However, the armed assailants opened fire at the officers while trying to escape, he added. During the fire exchange, the officer was injured.


He was taken to a nearby private hospital where he died. The body was later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. The armed men were roaming in the area intending to rob the citizens when they were intercepted by the police, said a witness. They started firing at the police to escape, he added.


Home Minister Sohail Siyal took the notice of the incident and announced Rs2 million compensation for the family of the deceased officer. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
