PESHAWAR: Days before the approaching election of district and town nazims, a complaint was moved against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Peshawar nazim hopeful Younis Zaheer for holding a dual nationality.

Malik Naseer Hussain, a resident of Gulbahar, urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to initiate legal proceedings against Zaheer who won a district council seat from the city’s union council 10 on May 30. The complainant maintained Zaheer is an Afghan national who took asylum in the United Kingdom on the basis of his Afghan citizenship. He added Zaheer obtained a UK passport after which he travelled to Pakistan on the same passport and obtained a Pakistani CNIC. The application stated Zaheer claims to be a resident of Sadda, Kurram Agency. “The candidate now intends to contest for the office of district nazim which is an offence and harmful for the country,” he stated.

He requested the elections commission to disqualify the candidate. When approached, Hussain said the authorities should investigate how Zaheer obtained his CNIC.

On the flipside, according to a document provided by Zaheer to The Express Tribune, he received a confirmation letter from the UK Border Agency on February 15, 2013, acknowledging that he had been registered for renouncing his British citizenship.
