Protest as two cops die after elite force training

UPPER DIR: The family members of a police constable took to the streets of Upper Dir on Thursday to protest against his killing after an elite force training session in Nowshera.

An official of Nowshera police told The Express Tribune, two constables, Hidayatullah and Muhammad Siraj – who hailed from Lower Dir and Upper Dir, respectively – came to Nowshera for an elite force training session on Wednesday.

“However, both constables fainted during the training due to scorching heat and were rushed to District Headquarters Hospital Nowshera,” the official said. “Siraj breathed his last at the hospital while Hidayatullah was shifted to Mardan Medical Complex and subsequently died. Their bodies were handed over to their families.”

Siraj’s family held a sit-in on the road connecting Dir and Peshawar. The family insisted Siraj was tortured during the training.

A relative of the deceased said there were torture marks on Siraj’s body. He demanded that judicial enquiry should be conducted into the matter.

Protesters subsequently dispersed after the local administration vowed to investigate the matter.

An insider familiar with the matter told The Express Tribune a majority of the constables who attended the training were treated in a
harsh manner.
