My interest was initially skewed towards graphic designing but I had always been interested in the arts. It wasn’t long before I began designing jewellery nearly a decade ago. Back then, the market was barren: most jewellery was too expensive and the more affordable options were poorly designed. I wanted to give women the option of reasonably priced, quality products that would fit their budgets and allow them to expand their choices.
How did Zarq, the brand, come about?
There have been many jewellery designers popping up over the past few years. Design imitation is rampant and it does affect how I conduct my business. That said, I want to keep evolving and strive to keep things fresh and original. Hence, I launched Zarq.
What is the most important thing to keep in mind before designing?
I take inspiration from anything and everything and incorporate it in my designs. I have to be sure that my jewellery has diversity and will cater to a wide range of preferences and budgets.
How does Zarq differ from other jewellery brands?
There are a few things that I value which form the cornerstone of how I choose to conduct business: originality, quality, competitive pricing and customers’ happiness. As I said earlier, jewellery designers are popping up by the dozen and while it provides choice to the people, it can also be confusing. I welcome people to Zarq to see the difference. I am very hands-on with my customers and all these elements come together to deliver a unique product and great experience.
How has the Pakistani jewellery industry changed over the past few years?
Where women were once restricted to certain brands and had limited choice, they are now open to upgrading their jewellery collections. They want to be fashion forward and seek variety. Accessorising has made a big comeback.
What do you think about new talent coming into the market these days?
I am inspired and impressed with some of their work but I do feel that many seem to be in a rush to make a quick buck, without effort and sincerity.
What is the hardest part about working in the industry?
Keeping your original designs and ideas from getting copied! It is really quite frustrating at times to see your designs getting nicked. Also, it can be challenging to get the workers to understand and try out different or new techniques.
Any advice to young women aspiring to become designers?
Believe in your dreams! Don’t give up, work hard and be original!
