10th death anniversary of an iconic singer
Noor Jehan, died in Karachi on December 23, 2000.
The tenth death anniversary of Madam Noor Jehan, one of Pakistan’s most iconic singers, was commemorated on Thursday.
Noor Jehan, who died in Karachi on December 23, 2000, was known by the honourary title of ‘Malka-e-Tarannum’ for her contribution to
the arts.
Born Allah Wasai, she acted in a number of films before she quit acting to focus on a career as a playback singer. She had over 10,000 songs to her credit.
Her children and grandchildren have continued her legacy and work in the arts as well. One of her granddaughters, Sonya Jehan, has acted in a number of Bollywood films.
Noor Jehan’s admirers included actors and artists, as well as politicians and poets. Faiz Ahmed Faiz dedicated his poem “Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat” to her.
She also sung a number of iconic nationalistic songs, including “Ae Puttar Hattan Te Nahin Vikday”.
