KARACHI: Five suspected militants belonging to different banned outfits were killed during an exchange of fire with law enforcers in one of the city's militant strongholds.

The encounter took place when a contingent of Rangers was on routine patrol in the Khairabad area of Manghopir. Rangers' officials said that the militants hiding in the area opened fire at the Rangers.

The Rangers' spokesperson said the encounter between the law enforcers and militants took place when the raiding party entered terrorists' hideout, adding that after an exchange of fire, five militants were killed. ASI Ejaz Aslam and a Rangers personnel, Pir Buksh, were also wounded in the incident. The injured law enforcers were shifted to a local hospital for treatment.

The Rangers and police officials claim to have recovered a huge cache of weapons and explosives from the militants.

The bodies of the militants were shifted to the Edhi morgue for identification after medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The Rangers and police officials claimed that the suspects belonged to different banned outfits. Manghopir SHO Ghulam Hussain Korai said the police have identified two of them via their intelligence wing. SHO Korai said that the two were identified as Hazrat and Kamal. The officer claimed that the militants killed belonged to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan.
