LAHORE:

The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will convert three public parks into model parks, PHA Director General Mian Shakeel Ahmad said on Sunday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Ahmad said that the authority would convert Ideal Park, Township; Shershah Block Park, Garden Town; and Q-Block Park, Model Town Extension, into model parks by developing new recreational and exercise facilities. “These parks will have facilities for people with special needs. The authority plans to install specially-designed swings and exercise equipments for special people. These model parks will have separate facilities for women and children,” he said.

He said that during the current fiscal, the PHA would also complete several ongoing schemes, including the Jallo Botanical Garden. “The project had been delayed after the funds were not released. Rs190 million will now be spent on the project. It will be completed by the end of October this year,” he said.

Ahmad said that the botanical garden would help in conservation of plants and understanding of plant diversity. “The park will also have recreational facilities for visitors,” he said.

Ahmad said that the authority would develop small parks at three sites along the Canal Road near the Muslim Town underpass. “There will be seating and parking arrangements for people, who want to spend some time on the canal bank,” he said.

“The PHA has also started designing greenbelts and landscaping for the Jail Road Signal Free Corridor. Rs4 million to Rs5 million is going to be spent on the beautification of the corridor,” he said.

Ahmad said that the authority was also planting new trees on both sides of Hadyara Drain over an eight-kilometre stretch.

He said that a butterfly aviary project had also been completed at the Jallo Forest Park.
