Protest against transporters: Case registered against more than 100 students
Cases registored against 116 protestors alleging police received a bribe from the transport mafia.
SARGODHA:
An FIR was registered agaisnt 36 nominated and 80 unidentified people including school and college students on Wednesday in the wake of the Bhera-Jawariyan Road blockade by students in protest against public transporters.
The protestors included students of grades 9 and 10 of several government schools and of the 1st and 2nd year of Government College Hafizabad.
Policemen from several police stations in the neighbouring areas reportedly baton charged the protestors and fired tear gas shells in a bid to disperse them.
Talking to The Express Tribune, some Government Degree College Hafizabad students said that public transport in the area was behind schedule almost every day.
They said that they had to miss an exam due to the delay caused by the transporters.
They alleged that police was colluding with the transporters, “they get kickbacks in return for staying silent.”
The students said Bhera police had assured them a week ago that they would negotiate with the transporters but no progress had been made.
Several residents of nearby Ranjhiawala village took to the streets following the baton charge of students by policemen from Bhera, Miani and Phlarwal police stations. They reportedly pelted stones at the policemen and exchanged harsh words with them.
Bhalwal ASI Sarfaraz Nawaz and Inspector Azhar Cheema, who were leading the police team, also stopped the journalists from covering the protest.
ASI Nawaz said he could not tolerate disruption of public order, adding that the students could have organised a peaceful protest but instead they resorted to a road block causing incontinence to the public.
The FIR has been registered under Sections 148, 149, 186, 459, 365, 324, 341, 353 and 440 of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Amplifier Act.
