Sports community celebrates Independence Day
Various events were held across the country

The Pakistan sports community celebrated Independence Day by holding events in various cities across the country.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa clinched the gold at the Jashan-e-Azadi Judo championship in Peshawar.
K-P took 90 points along with four gold medals, two silver and two bronze, while Punjab secured second place with 80 points, two gold medals, four silver and two bronze medals in the competition. FATA finished third with two gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals.
Punjab
The Punjab Badminton Association organised the Team Event Doubles Championship which was won by Lahore Greens after they defeated Lahore Whites 3-2 at the New Khan Badminton Hall.
At the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore SBP XI defeated Commissioner 4-2.
Sindh
In Karachi, events ranging from donkey cart races to cycling competitions were organized at different venues around the city.
The biggest event was the Karachi Horse Race Club’s (KRC) Independence Day Cup. James Parday won the 1,200m race at the Karachi Race Club with rider Sohail Ahmed.
James Parday covered the distance in 1min 16sec to clinch the trophy and earn a cash reward of Rs100,000, while Gamezover came second with rider Zaki Zakir and Edgar finished third with rider Fatahyab Chaudhry.
Out of the five races at the KRC, Fatayab also won the Nishan-e-Haider Cup with rider Muhammad Manzoor.
“The Independence Day Cup is always special,” a KRC official told The Express Tribune. “It’s the biggest event after the December 25 races and people really come to cheer for their favorite horses.”
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Scrabble Association (PSA) also held a three-day tournament featuring 35 players in the Independence Day event.
National champion Waseem Khatri was the star of the day, winning most of his matches.
In other sports, Sindh Police defeated Karachi 17-12 in the Netball Championship at the Mini Sports Complex in Nazimabad.
Players Jamaluddin, Muhammad Ajmal and Shahzad were the outstanding players for police.
In an exhibition netball match, Sindh Police defeated the Karachi Regional team 17-12.
