LAHORE: Several public and private organisations in the city have planned events to mark Independence Day on Friday.

A dress rehearsal was held at the Hazoori Bagh on Thursday in which several students practiced singing the national anthem. The celebration next to the Badshahi Masjid will start at 7am on Friday. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the Punjab school education secretary, the Lahore education EDO, the Lahore DCO and several members of the Provincial Assembly will participate in the event.  School Education Department Secretary Abdul Jabbar Shaheen said Independence Day celebrations will include performances, speeches and tableaus by students.

The Punjab Girl Guides Association has organised an event in this regard at the Guide House at 11am. Public schools in the city have planned Independence Day celebrations as well

The Punjab University (PU), the Government College (GCU) Lahore, the Forman Christian College and the University of Education among other institutions will hold flag-hoisting ceremonies.

At PU, a ceremony will be held in front of the VC’s Office, New Campus, at 8am. The PU vice chancellor will hoist the national flag. Deans of faculty, heads of teaching departments, senior faculty members and employees will also attend the ceremony. Sports activities will be held at the PU Law College, and badges, caps, shirts bearing the Pakistani flags insignia, and sweets will be distributed among the participants.

The Idara-i-Taleem-o-Aagahi will celebrate the day and the completion of two million signatures for its #UpForSchool and End Child Marriages (ECM) petitions. The NGO will present the signatures to policy makers and parliamentarians across the country.
